Last month, I was fortunate enough to take a family trip back East to Cape Cod. I was reminded of how pleasant it is to be detached from technology, and truly enjoy living in the moment. We have all become so dependent on our cellphones, laptops and tablets, that we find ourselves easily distracted from family and friends. Due to bad cell service and spotty Wi-Fi connections, everyone was able to put our devices down and just spend time with each other on the beach. There is nothing more amazing than watching little kids run through the ocean, build sand castles, and fly kites. It took me back to the days of my childhood when we used to play outside every afternoon until dinner.
Remember how valuable your time is with your family. Detach yourself from technology for a few hours, and just connect. Whether it is a discussion over dinner about everyone’s day, an evening bike ride, or a trip to the gym (in the Arizona heat of course); take the time to remember how valuable your family is. These are the moments that we cannot get back.
As my son often says “Mommy, what is more important, me or your phone?” What a wakeup call that we could all use. I always answer “Of course, you are; you are the most important person in the world to me.” And then I put down my phone…
