Marijuana Laws and Gun Ownership

Many people celebrated the recent passing of the voter proposition that made recreational marijuana legal in Arizona. However, if you are a gun owner, you may want to hold off on taking that first drag. Federal law still prohibits gun ownership if you are a marijuana user. Many states including Arizona have made marijuana legal. But, if you are legally using marijuana, you may now be illegally possessing your guns, if you own any. One can be arrested for violating federal law and have one’s guns confiscated for lighting up that doobie. Hopefully, someday the Federal and State governments will get on the same page when it comes to marijuana laws and gun ownership. Until they do, gun owners should be aware of the contradiction and potential unintended consequences and repercussions in the law.
