Many of you probably remember my letter about my father from last Father’s day. Not to be forgotten is the other half of the equation known as my parents. I have been blessed with the most amazing, thoughtful and generous mother. Throughout my life she has been someone to look up to, a shoulder to cry on, and a source of constant advice.
In light of the family dynamics and drama that I see every day in my practice, I have come to realize how truly blessed I am to have such an amazing role model as a parent. I have learned that being a parent in a two household family versus a one household family is not any easier or more difficult. It just comes with its own set of challenges. Every situation is different, as is every family. How one person defines “family” is not the same as how another person may define the same word.
At this time of year, I hope we can all stop and take a moment out of our busy lives to appreciate the intricacies of our own families and remember all of the special things our Mother’s bring or have brought to our lives on this Mother’s Day. I certainly do so every day, but on Mother’s Day in particular.
