I remember when I was growing up we were always warned – and still are – about drinking while driving. I remember when MADD first began and how much of an impact those concerned and proactive parents had in changing attitudes at the time about drinking while driving.
Fast forward to 2013 and we find ourselves confronted with a new problem – texting while driving. I have to say that in the past few years the amount of people I have represented in accidents caused by people using their phones vs. drinking is quite alarming. In fact, almost half of the accidents I come across these days are caused by cell phone use.
Recently, there was an article that mentioned a ruling by the New Jersey State Appeals Court where the Judges accepted the argument of finding a girlfriend liable for the accident caused by her boyfriend because she was texting him while he was driving. Ultimately, it could not be proven that she actually knew he was driving – but the point is clear, texting while driving is dangerous for everyone.
